One of the oldest Durga Puja Associations of Bangalore, Jayamahal Cultural Association (JCA) is proud to be celebrating its 72nd year of Sharod Utsav. The Association has been actively involved in various charitable activities along with its sociocultural initiatives.
The festival is celebrated at the ‘Ladies Club’ premises in the prime locality of Jayamahal Extension. Unique among the Sharod Utsav celebrations in Bangalore, the celebrations are held in an open area in the pristine surroundings of Jayamahal.
Through the decades, Jayamahal Durga Puja has been a trend-setter in Bangalore, from introducing the theme puja concept in Bangalore in 2014 to providing a platform to aspiring artists through Muktangan to creating exhibitions on topics ranging from Tagore to 75 Years of independence to setting up a digital pavilion in 2023, while always maintaining its respect for tradition and the local culture.
The LEGACY.
Jayamahal Durga Puja has a long and illustrious history. After the TDE (Technical Development Establishment) was moved to Bangalore, Col. B M Chakravarty headed the unit. With active help from the Superintendent-in-Charge Col. B M Chakravorty, the first Durga puja by TDE people was performed in a vacant building in Mysore Lancer Lines in 1955. Mr. Sachindranath Das was entrusted with the making of the idol in an empty Army barrack.
This puja continued and was renamed as the Defence Establishment Puja. When TDE was bifurcated into LRDE & CIL, the staff were asked to vacate Mysore Lancers. In 1966,other Defence organizations of Bangalore wanted a common puja. Wg. Commander S N Roy Choudhury took over this puja in 1966 as President and it was renamed as the Defence Puja. The puja shifted from Mysore Lancer to an open place in Jayamahal. As space was not available in Jayamahal, this puja was shifted to the Coorgi Hall (Kodava Samaja Hall) in Vasanth Nagar after few years. This puja finally shifted to the current venue of Ladies Club ground next to Jayamahal Park in 1973 and to this day, for the last 54 years, the Jayamahal Durga Puja is celebrated in this ground.
After 72 years, a journey started humbly in 1955 has thus become a carnival and not a puja alone. It is a legacy to be cherished and continued.

In its 72nd year of celebrations, Jayamahal Cultural Association will be offering a unique theme and decoration by renowned artists and craftsmen from Chitra Kala Parishad along with a scintillating cultural programme with popular artistes from Kolkata and Bangalore.
Combined with other major attractions like the pushpanjali and the evening arati, the community feast, the food court, the dandiya, the event is sure to draw huge crowds of Bangaloreans from all communities with an expected footfall of 10,000 to 15,000 per day at the Utsav site.
